Ourtown

OURTOWN – a bespoke project conceived as a parallel outreach project and companion piece to our touring production Smalltown.

Created in 2011, OURTOWN saw acclaimed playwrights Lewis Hetherington, Lynda Radley and JC Marshall take up residence in schools throughout East, North and South Ayrshire. Lynda in Kilmarnock with pupils of St Joseph’s Academy and Grange Academy, JC in South Ayrshire at Girvan Academy and Carrick Academy and Lewis working with Garnock Academy’s aspiring writers in North Ayrshire.

Beginning with the premise that ‘something has been put in the water’ the exact same stimulus used by the 3 writers of Smalltown the pupils took part in workshops and specialist creative writing sessions. This has allowed for quirky meditations on the students’ home towns with sometimes surprising and touching results.  The work was then collated and published in a unique book.

The collection is intended to amuse, delight and provoke - as all best pieces of work should do.

Random Accomplice are delighted to have been able to engage with so many exciting and inspiring young people and we couldn’t have done this without the generous support of Awards for All.

Press Quotes

"Working in Garnock Academy was a real pleasure. I have no doubt at all that we will be hearing much more from the vivid imaginations of these young writers in the future."  Lewis Hetherington

"More often than not the creative writing class became a philosophical debate: What does it mean to lose our humanity? Is being wild and primal necessarily worse than being civilised? Well done to everyone who contributed ideas and congratulations on the excellent pieces of writing."  JC Marshall

"In both schools I was struck by the young people’s willingness to talk, share, listen and take risks. I hope they are proud of what they’ve achieved."   Lynda Radley
