Working with Random Accomplice Artistic directors Johnny and Julie, MARY MASS-ACRE saw a variety of community groups come together to create an afternoon of performance and dramatic readings.
Collaboration between Random Accomplice and The Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine this participation project worked on 2 strands. The first saw the company working with local writers group – ‘Write out of the ordinary’ over a ten-week period. During this time the participants wrote stories and monologues inspired by Irvine’s Marymass festival. These stories were then part of the Mary Mass-Acre performance and also read aloud by professional actors at local libraries in free events for the public.
The Marymass festival is a traditional and iconic part of Irvine’s cultural diary. One that is rich in histories, a truly shared experience that units all that are from the local area – Everybody has a story to tell about the Marymass fair.
The second strand of the project was a weeklong intensive residency with the directors, the HAC youth theatre and the adult drama class. Here the group came together and using a multitude of devising and writing techniques they created a unique performance that paid homage to and celebrated the stories of Marymass. Again the final public performance was free to all and provided a fantastic outlet for the participants to show off their brilliant work created in a matter of days.
